By
focusing on regional technology-driven growth, northwest Louisiana is
doing its part to keep American innovation competitive in the
world.
And the Biomedical Research Foundation is helping to lead
the way, according to Jack Sharp, its president and chief executive
officer.
Sharp described to about 200 attending the
foundation's annual meeting and stakeholder recognition luncheon this
afternoon how locally, the foundation has been funneling millions of
dollars to build a network of collaborating universities, businesses,
government officials and elementary and secondary schools to develop a
strong "pipeline of knowledge" for math, science and technology
innovation.
Sharp cited several government study statistics
relating to America's struggle to develop a strong foundation of math and
science in its schools for children and young adults. The foundation has
recently been recognized by a regional think tank, the Southern Growth
Policy Board, for its effort to build an interconnected system in the
community that fosters an interest in technology-driven innovation among
young students.
"For eight years we have been investing in the
development of such an ecosystem here in little old Shreveport-Bossier,"
he said, "and we are shaping new knowledge-based industries for our
community."
