BRF maintains and promotes the InterTech Science Park, an 800-acre urban Brownfields, smart growth initiative located in the Kings Highway/Mansfield Road area of Shreveport. The resident companies represent pharmaceutical, digital and entertainment media, drug discovery, venture capital support and environmental industries.
Initiated in 1997 by community leaders to provide specialized facilities with laboratory, cleanroom, manufacturing and office space for high tech companies, the InterTech Science Park has grown to include 12 facilities with 844,000 square feet and over 25 tenants. The purpose was to create an environment and space that would attract creative companies to Shreveport and retain home grown talent.
InterTech is an 800-acre campus bounded by I-20 and I-49, and is located in inner-city Shreveport near LSU School of Medicine and University Health Shreveport hospital. The long-term master plan is to continue growth with facilities and amenities that promote and improve the community and increase economic opportunities for Caddo Parish.
In 2006, the InterTech facility was recognized by the Southern Growth Policies Board with the Innovator of the Year Award in Innovation and Technology. It’s been described as a community response to the need to diversify the economy of northwest Louisiana and has encouraged the growth of technology-based industries.
Located in an aging manufacturing area of inner city Shreveport, InterTech is redeveloping sites with $1 million in grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program, and assistance from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Shreveport.
The BRF constructed three state of the art facilities in InterTech, which include:
- The Virginia K. Shehee Biomedical Research Institute, a 160,000 square foot, $37 million research facility with 56 laboratories where 200 investigators and technicians from LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport conduct basic research.
- InterTech’s central facility, InterTech 1, is a 60,000 square foot, $12.2 million incubator for new bioscience and technology businesses.
- A 33,000 square foot cleanroom manufacturing facility, where Nestlé Health Science (formerly PamLab’s Red River Pharma) now resides.
Plans are underway to construct a new facility for the BRF’s Center for Molecular Imaging and Therapy at the Southern Isotopes location on Kings Highway.
